As of January 20, Amazon Kindle began allowing customers to download some of its DRM-free ebooks in epub and pdf. I've opted in my e-books to this program.

My apologies to Ream readers for the formatting quirks in the Ream editions of Law Links and Death Mask. I worked with Ream's forever-patient customer service for eight months to try to work out the conversion problems I encountered, before I had to give up. The text isn't affected by the formatting issues, you'll be happy to know.

"Heir" (The Three Lands: Blood Vow side story) – delayed because of my concussion last year – will be my next release.

I don't usually do yearly goals or whatever because I inevitably get bored and give up on them, but I think I'd at least like to make a list of things I'd ideally like to do for this year, and keep them in the back of my mind.

Here's what I've got:

1. Don't shop on Amazon, with an exception for a Kindle Unlimited sub if/when I get a discount offer
2. Buying used is preferable, when possible
3. $50/month allowance for books (paper or ebook)
4. Learn new skills (tbd)
5. Go on walks
6. Try something new/be open to new experiences ✨️
8. Don't worry about money

I’m sad to say that the thirty-eighth round of Small Fandoms Fest has come to an end, but we’ve had so many great submissions, and now we get to look forward to next round!

For those of you wondering we had 53 submissions this round in 32 different fandoms, as well as 3 fandom pimps. Thank you so much to those of you who made the move to DW with us and to those of you who are just finding us. I appreciate that you chose to play in this sandbox despite all the other holiday challenges and exchanges you have to choose from.

Authors, rough drafts are due in just a few days (by Saturday, January 31)! Remember that your rough draft need not be 100% complete, but should be a minimum of 8,000 words/80% completed. I need the story descriptions for the claims list I'm putting together so there are no extensions granted.

(That said, I am flexible on how much story you need to have completed at this time if you are absolutely certain that you will have your final draft completed by the due date and that you will have something substantial to submit to your artist. Your other option is to continue participating, but choosing to opt out of art.)

If you haven't done so already, head on over to the Rough Draft Submission Rules post for instructions on how to turn in your rough draft.

If you will not be submitting a rough draft (or choosing to opt out of art), please contact me to let me know that you are withdrawing from this round of Small Fandoms Bang. You may comment here (comments will be screened) or send an e-mail to the mod account at sfbbmod @ gmail.com. (Please remember that there are penalties if you just disappear without letting me know that you need to withdraw, so don’t do that!)

Additional Notes:

1. The Artist Claiming Post will go up one week from this Saturday, on Saturday, February 7. Artists will claim a story from the story descriptions, which will be posted anonymously. (The Sneak Peak post will go up at least 24 hours prior to the Claiming Post, though I’m shooting for 48 hours to give all the artists time to review the summaries.) If you want to thank someone in Emor for your inn's lavatory, this is the place to do so. Emor's engineers are the best in the world and are admirably eager to spread their wonderful inventions outside of Emor. If you wish, you may make arrangements here to have your own tribe's housing improved; some engineers are willing to travel as far as the mainland, if the job is interesting enough.

As you may have guessed by now, "Engineering Academy" means that engineering students are trained here. While the Law Academy and Medical Academy train only peninsulareans, the Engineering Academy opens its doors to mainlanders as well. You may apply for entrance into the Academy while you are here.

[Translator's note: The Emorian engineers are so discreet in their work that they aren't often seen. However, their Marcadian colleagues are the ones to blame for the terrifying catapult used in Empty Dagger Hand.]

Authors, this is your rough draft submission post!

Don’t freak out, though, your rough drafts aren’t due today. I’m putting up the submission rules early so that people who have their fic finished, or were having computer or internet issues, could submit their rough draft early if they so wished. (And, to be fair, not getting all of the submissions in one day would also benefit me, as well. *g*)

The rough draft submission date is next Saturday, January 31, so you still have a week to get your fic to the “required” 8,000 words/80% completed place if you haven’t already. (And yes, I used quotation marks because I’m flexible about that so long as you will A) have your fic finished by the final draft deadline of March 31 and B) have something substantial to send to your artist after claims – claims open on February 7 and the matching reveal will be made on February 14.)

The rain let up yesterday so I went into town to do some thrifting! I spotted some interesting knick-knaocks, like a tiny Limoges decorative bowl and some bone china stuff but nothing that wowed me (or that I wanted to haul around until I get back to the US, for that matter). I DID find a decent book selection, though! I got 5 books for £17/$22 USD, which I think is pretty good.
